The World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts, or WAMMA as most call it, is looking to add another champion to their roster by making the highly anticipated Eddie Alvarez/Shinya Aoki fight at K1 Dynamite!! 2008 on New Years Eve for the official WAMMA lightweight title.  For those who don’t already know, Fedor Emelienanko is currently the only other WAMMA champion out there, a title he won by brutally destroying former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia at Affliction: Banned last July.  Some might say that the WAMMA titles are worthless due to the lack of participation by the UFC, an organization which holds WAMMA’s #1 ranked lightweight fighter, BJ Penn.  I disagree, while I don’t think the WAMMA belts measure up to the UFC’s, I still think that any person sporting the title is a clear cut, top fighter throughout the world.  I firmly believe that both Eddie and Aoki could possibly be the #1 ranked lightweight someday, I think both guys posses the tools to give even the famed BJ Penn a run for him money.  As a supporter of WAMMA, I really like that they’re branching out and looking to add more champions to their organization.  It’ll be interesting to see how this fight goes, and to see where else WAMMA goes into the new year.

Here’s WAMMA’s current top ten lightweight rankings:

  • 1 - B.J. Penn (13-4-1)
  • 2 - Eddie Alvarez (15-1)
  • 3 - Shinya Aoki (18-3)
  • 4 - Kenny Florian (11-3)
  • 5 - Joachim Hansen (19-7-1)
  • 6 - Sean Sherk (33-3-1)
  • 7 - Takanori Gomi (29-4)
  • 8 - Gesias Calvancante (14-2-1)
  • 9 - Tatsuya Kawajiri (22-5-2)
  • 10 - Josh Thomson (16-2)
